Default The F1 "Halo" device

The FIA are claiming that Charles LeClerc's life was saved by the halo when Fernando's car went over the top of his on Sunday.

Bull. Total and utter bull.

It wouldn't have saved Massa in Hungary, it wouldn't have saved Bianchi in Japan and it didn't save LeClerc in Belgium. It's almost a complete waste of time. At best it could protect a driver from a flying tyre, which is now virtually impossible. What it can't do, and wasn't designed to do, is stand up to a high speed impact or the weight of an entire car landing on top of it. It's too big to protect against something small - i.e. the spring that bounced off the road and hit Felipe Massa in the head - and too small to protect against something big, like the truck that Jules Bianchi's car crashed into.

The regulations require that a driver must be able to get out of the car in seven seconds including the time taken to release his seat belts. Watching the drivers at the end of a race, it now takes them twenty seconds after they've released their belts. It's in the way. In a fire their chances of survival are thus seriously reduced IMO. F1 has been steadily improving safety standards since Ayrton Senna's crash, but I think this is the first new safety device that could actually kill someone.
